Teens are more prone to unhealthy habits which affect their dental health. Here are some dental issues that a teen should know.

  • Nutrition plays a very important role in dental health. Having too much foods that are rich in sugars and starches promote plaque formation that destroys tooth enamel. So, avoid snacks like candies, foods with brown sugars, junk foods etc. Include nutritious foods such as cheese, raw vegetables, etc., that are rich in vitamins and minerals in your diet.
  • Teens are more vulnerable to substance and alcohol abuse that promotes tooth discoloration and many other dental problems. Even smoking can stain the teeth and gums, promote tartar build-up and enhance bad breath. Habitual use of cigars, tobacco products and cigarettes rises the risk of oral cancer too.
  • Problems such as crooked teeth, crowded teeth and poor jaw alignment are common in pre-teens and teens. They are suggested with braces to correct these dental problems. Proper cleaning of teeth and other measures should be taken after having braces. But, teens do not follow them and often suffer from pain due to dental braces.
  • Oral piercing is the other common issue seen with teens. It can cause problems like uncontrollable bleeding, infections, and nerve damage. Studs, barbells and hoops that are often used may become loose, the teeth can get cracked and chipped because of the metal jewelry.

These dental issues, on the whole, affect dental health and hence, should be avoided. Specific healthy dental care activities should be practiced and nutritional diet should be taken to ensure dental health.
